Making sure that your child is eating healthy is one of the biggest building blocks for developing and maintaining good oral health.

A balanced diet full of proteins, the right kinds of produce and calcium rich dairy will ensure that your child not only grows strong and healthy teeth, but will be healthy in every aspect of their growth.


It’s important to avoid foods that are sugary and sticky when giving children snacks. Not only are these foods typically packed with sugar, the sticky nature of them means that they do not easily wash off of the teeth with saliva. If your child does eat things like raisins, candy, honey or anything else sticky, please have them brush their teeth immediately after consuming one of these treats.

Keeping alternatives in the home can help encourage healthy snacking. Pears, celery, cucumbers, melons, carrots and apples are all great produce ideas that will help keep your child full and healthy. The water in these snacks encourages saliva production, which is important for washing away bacteria. Not to mention the vitamins and minerals each of these fruits and vegetables provides your child.

Cheese cubes, especially cheddar cheese, are a good dairy staple to have on hand for snacking as well. Monterey Jack, Swiss, and other aged cheeses help trigger the saliva flow and the calcium found in cheese and other dairy is essential for building strong teeth and bones.

When it comes to healthy protein, we recommend lean meats like chicken or lean beef. Fish, dry beans, and peas are also an excellent source of protein for your child. If your family prefers a vegetarian or vegan diet, there are many plant-based proteins available. Chick peas, tofu, lentils, nuts, beans and seeds can be integrated to increase protein levels for your child.
