As you know, when you bring your child to a new environment, the whole ordeal can be rather stressful for child and parent alike. This isn’t because the new place is bad or unfriendly; rather, it is simply something that is new and unknown.
And, as you know, some children are afraid or stressed when they experience something new for the first time. So, when you bring your child to see us for the first time, there are some things you can do beforehand to make the process easier.
EXPLAIN WHAT WILL HAPPEN
Sit down with your child and explain to him or her what’s going to happen. Tell him or her that you’re visiting a special doctor who will help keep his or her teeth happy and healthy. Give your child time to digest this and ask any questions that he or she may have.
If you search online, you will find many videos that could be helpful. Designed for children, these can help explain to your child what will happen and what they should expect. An age appropriate explanation of a visit to our office will go a long way towards relieving fear and uncertainty.
FEEL FREE TO COME VISIT FIRST
Some of our parents decide to bring their child in to see us before the actual dental appointment. This lets the child develop some familiarity with the office and staff. This visit can be a simple tour of the office, or it could even just be a time to sit in the waiting room and get comfortable.
We can even let your child sit in the dental chair to see what it’s like! By helping your child get used to being in our office, you can help reduce his or her concerns when it’s time for the actual dental visit.
