Your Child's First Trip to the Dentist

AT Pleasanton Pediatric Dentistry, we will make sure your child's first dentist visit is fun and easy.We want every visit that you and your child have at Pleasanton Pediatric Dentistry to be wonderful, positive experience. Our pediatric doctors and dental team of friendly professionals completely understand how stressful the first visit to the dentist can be for your child. It’s our mission to set our young patients up with the confidence they’ll need to maintain excellent oral health. We also understand it can be a nerve-wracking time for the parents of our young patients on their first visit, so we’ve put together some helpful information here.

Our Friendly Front Desk Will Greet You and get You Started.

When you first arrive at our Pleasanton, CA dental office (click for office tour), you’ll be greeted by one of our staff at the front desk. They’ll help you through the signing-in process. Usually, this involves some new patient paperwork, and we’re always happy to help you with anything that seems unclear. Some of the forms you can expect will be new patient registration, medical, and dental history forms. These forms ensure that we’re aware of all pertinent health and dental history.

What to Expect at Your Child's First Dentist Appointment.

•

Office Tour:

Once the paperwork has been completed, we will greet your child and take them back to meet the rest of our staff and The Doctors at our pediatric dental offices. We’ll also give your little one a tour of the patient chairs and equipment that we will use. From our years of experience, we’ve learned that a little show and tell goes a long way to reduce any uncertainty or stress your child might be experiencing.

•

Dental X-Rays:

We’ll usually begin the examination with a set of pediatric dental x-rays so we can get a clearer view of your child’s mouth. X-rays are mandatory for all new patients because they allow us to see our patient’s oral health in greater detail. We can look for early signs of cavities and even see some adult teeth that have yet to emerge. We’ll be able to assess if these teeth are likely to experience spacing issues later in your child’s life.

•

Dental Cleaning:

After the x-rays, we’ll begin a thorough, professional cleaning. We’ll remove plaque and tartar that may have built up on your child’s teeth and make sure that their smile is sparkling!

•

Dental Exam:

Following the cleaning, we conduct a meticulous dental examination of your child’s mouth. During the exam, The Doctors at our pediatric dental offices will check for any signs of decay as well as a host of other issues, including but not limited to: growths, teeth coming in and their progress, and the potential need for orthodontia. After the exam, you’re all set!

Help to Reduce Dental Anxiety by Avoiding Trigger Words.

When preparing for your child's first dentist visit, try not to use scary words that might trigger them. It’s natural for kids to be a little nervous about their first dental appointment, but there are some things you can do early on to help prevent unnecessary anxiety for your little one. In the days leading up to your child’s first visit, we recommend avoiding certain words like “hurt,” “shot,” “needle,” and “drill” when talking about the dentist. These words might trigger concern or fear if linked to an experience they haven’t had yet and don’t understand.
